2 x Casual Biosecurity Field Workers – Argentine Ant Monitoring, Kawau Island

Monday 12–Friday 16 October

I’m seeking two reliable, physically fit people to assist with Argentine ant monitoring on Kawau Island as part of Auckland Council’s ongoing eradication project.

The work involves placing small plastic pottles containing a non-toxic lure at approximately 3m intervals across lawns, gardens and bush areas. The pottles are later collected and checked for Argentine ants.

Shared accommodation will be provided at the Sandspit campground. Each morning, you’ll travel by ferry from Sandspit to Kawau Island.

This is physically demanding work involving long days, off-track bushwalking, steep inclines and potentially hot or wet conditions.

Essential equipment — please do not apply without:

  • Proper hiking boots — running shoes are not suitable
  • Water bottle
  • Wet-weather gear

To apply, please send a brief summary of your relevant outdoor or fieldwork experience and confirm that you’re available for the full week.

Important: This is genuinely hard physical work, not a light monitoring role. You must be confident you can manage consecutive long days walking and working off-track across steep, uneven terrain.
