Kia Ora Travellers,
We are a small hostel located in central Queenstown looking to add a night porter to our team.
We are looking to fill the night porter role as soon as possible, with a minimum of at least 2-3 months required, but more if preferable. This is because the role will require some training and therefore, we would rather not have to continually replace this position.
Please note, THIS ROLE IS IN EXCHANGE FOR ACCOMMODATION.
The night porter is responsible for keeping both our guests and the building safe and secure overnight, acting as the main point of contact in the evenings, and ensuring the hostel is clean and tidy for the morning.
Responsibilities Include:
- Ensuring guests are upholding the hostel house rules at all times.
- Enforcing the 10pm quiet time and asking guests who wish to continue enjoying their evening to either move on or quieten down.
- Undertaking evening housekeeping to refresh shared bathrooms and reset the communal kitchens and common areas.
- Keeping the building secure by locking all external doors, ensuring only guests are in the building after 10pm and monitoring movements in/out of the building with the assistance of CCTV.
- Answering the on-call night phone overnight which is only called for lockouts & emergencies. You do not need to be awake for this, but you must remain on-site. You will receive an additional on-call allowance for this in addition to your hourly rate.
- Confidently leading an evacuation should the fire alarm be activated (training will be provided).
Qualifications:
- Experience in a similar role, or a role with transferable skills, is highly desirable. This is the most important qualification we will consider in selecting a candidate.
- Proven experience that you can confidently manage large groups of people calmly.
- Project a professional image at all times.
- A strong standard of verbal and written English is essential.
- Availability to work across a 7-day roster.
- Valid visa to work in NZ + IRD number.
- Minimum stay of at least 2-3 months.
This is a role which requires confidence to be able to interact and manage guests who enjoy the Queenstown nightlife. You will need to be able to deescalate situations, enforce our ‘quiet time’ and ensure that the hostel is maintained as a safe space for all guests and staff in the evenings. Therefore, a high standard of English is essential as is the confidence to interact with our guests when they return from their evenings in town.
You would be given approximately 20 hours a week on a rotating roster of 4 nights on, 4 nights off, working from around 8:30PM to 2AM including a 30-minute unpaid break, taken at your discretion. You will be rotating the shifts with our current night porter.
In return you will be provided with a queen-sized pod in our staff dormitory (shared bathrooms & kitchens). The weekly rent for this room will be deducted from your wages. Therefore, this role is best suited to someone who is looking to work in exchange for accommodation as the majority of your wages will go towards paying for your pod (about 12 hours of work). In addition, you may be able to pick up extra work in other roles if required, or additional hours as a night porter if needed.
If you believe you'd be a good fit for the role, please feel free to respond to this post and we will reach out to the appropriate candidates. Alternatively, if you're already in Queenstown, feel free to drop by and introduce yourself in person - we're at 11 Henry Street.
