A fabulous opportunity for a nature orientated person and willing worker to come and help in a small, customer focussed tourism business in beautiful Stewart Island.  A great learning oppportunity for someone who is not fixed on income, but wants to contribute and help a small business continue to operate and survive.

My business is a local, independent, professional, tourist business, operating since 2000. Before Covid, I had 3 other staff.  I am also trying to recruit a qualified skipper and I do all the rest of the work myself, but really need some help!

Could you be the right person to join a small team as my Assistant: Sales / Marketing / Admin person, interacting directly with clients?  Effectively a support person.

You will need to be hard working, a quick learner, with attention to detail, energetic, enthusiastic, friendly and outgoing. You will need to be able to handle responsibility.  A commitment for the full season is helpful and we may be able to get help to extend work visas for the duration of our season, essential due to the training time involved to understand our tours and local environment.  We try to recruit permanent New Zealanders each year, but struggle to find people who want to relocate, so we often rely on travellers.

Work is based in our centrally located booking office / outdoor shop.
Our ideal candidate is / has:

  • Previous sales / customer service and / or tourism background
  • Mature, responsible
  • Honest and trustworthy
  • A positive can-do attitude and is flexible
  • Customer orientated
  • Good organisational skills, ability to multi-task, accurate with attention to detail
  • Excellent written and spoken English is essential
  • Good personal presentation
  • High personal hygiene standards and able to follow our protocal for Health and Safety

Duties include:

  • Selling tours, services, retailing goods
  • Greeting visitors and providing clients with tour information
  • Liaising with our skipper / guides / other staff members
  • Maintaining accurate and timely paperwork
  • Assisting with marketing and administration tasks
  • Helping to maintain a clean and tidy work environment
  • Any other reasonable tasks

Employment Period and Hours of Work

  • For immediate start to April / May 2020
  • Part-Time from 20 hours guaranteed a week over 5 days or 5.5 days, but if we get sufficient bookings / tours, the hours may increase. 
  • Covering the office when I am not able to (e.g. when I am guiding tours etc).

  • Eligible to work in NZ
  • Able to have a skype interview and preferably planning to travel to Stewart Island and willing to attend a face to face interview at a mutally convenient location.
  • Hold a clean driver's licence (if possible an NZ driver's licence).
  • A current first aid certificate would be beneficial or willing to obtain (all the major towns in New Zealand have St John's and Red Cross First Aid courses).
  • Have no commitments that require extended leave during our key tourist season (October to April).
