New Zealand Travel Tips & Questions

Which is better – North or South Island?

An almost impossible question to answer but one you will find yourself faced with from several Kiwis as you travel. The two islands are so different they could be separate countries and it really depends on your own taste.

The South Island has all the fiords and glaciers and most of the mountains. The North Island has the best of the geo-thermal activity including live volcanoes, geysers and hot pools. If you are looking for Maori culture the North Island is your best bet but if you want to escape the crowds then the South Island has greater wilderness areas and a far smaller population.

The South Island is home to Queenstown – dubbed the adventure capital of New Zealand – but the Northland of the North Island offers a subtropical climate and warmer waters.

If you are looking for beautiful beaches, awesome scenery and a warm Kiwi welcome you will find those things on both islands.
