New Zealand Travel Tips & Questions

Do I need health insurance?

It isn't compulsory but is highly advisable. New Zealand has a reciprocal health agreement with the UK which means UK citizens can receive the same free or part-funded treatment as New Zealand citizens provided the condition is deemed in need of prompt attention by the medical practitioner (or dentist if the patient is under 19) and didn't exist before arriving in New Zealand. Pre-existing conditions which become worse on arrival may also be eligible.

In practice things aren't always as simple as that and without comprehensive medical insurance you may find yourself landed with a hefty bill. Most good travel insurances incorporate a good health cover section and there are now many companies aiming their insurance products specifically at the long term traveller or gap year market.

If you intend to be taking part in any extreme sports then health insurance is vital. Certain sports such as skiing and surfing are excluded from some policies so be sure to check.
