New Zealand Travel Tips & Questions

Can I hitch-hike in New Zealand?

If you do find yourself in need of a lift it is unlikely you will be left standing for long before a friendly Kiwi stops to offer you a ride. Outside of the big cities Kiwis seem to find it impossible to drive past some-one in need and even single women will stop for you if they think you are in trouble.

There are also a huge number of travellers in vans and cars and these too will often stop – taking pity on a fellow backpacker. However, even in a country as safe as New Zealand, hitch-hiking carries a few risks, especially for single females. Although many people do use hitch-hiking as their sole means of travelling around New Zealand and manage it successfully, it is generally considered not advisable.
