Position: Ski Technician (Live-in Role)
Starting date: Immediately
Requirements: 3-month minimum commitment or until end of season.
Adventure Hostels NZ - New Zealand’s best-rated hostel group are on the hunt for a vibrant, engaging & focused individual to join the team in Queenstown. This role as ski-technician is 1 hour of work per day, 7-days a week, between 5-6pm or 6-7pm (your preference) each evening.
Under the new employment rules this is a paid job, working 7 hours per week, (@ $35.40+8% holiday pay) This is a live in position staying in a shared dorm and your accommodation and expenses are $270.00 per week, which will be deducted from your weekly pay which is the equivalent of the old rule working for accommodation, so you WILL NOT RECEIVE A WAGE but you will not be out of pocket. We will issue you with a contract explaining this when you start.
Our ski-tech will be able to fit guests into the correct boards or skis and must have the experience and know-how to modify and adjust skis and boards. Minimal training will be provided for this role.
- Ski-tech lives on site at Adventure Q2 Hostel - in an 8-Bed Staff room.
- 7 hours work per week, 1-hour per day
- Working hours are either 5-6pm or 6-7pm daily - your preference.
- Will pair our guests up with correct gear – boards, skis and boots only.
- No cash handling or computer knowledge required.
REQUIREMENTS
- MUST have experience with boards and ski fittings, bindings.
- No training will be provided.
- Commitment to stay with us throughout the season
- Good verbal English will be required.
- Can keep our stores organised and tidy.
Our Gear rental service sees us rent our small selection of Skis, boards, winter clothing and safety equipment out to Guests of the hostel. We offer this service on a discount to Adventure Hostel guests making it the cheapest gear rental option in town.
The Ski tech will be responsible for matching Guests that do wish to rent gear onto the correct size board and into the correct boots, or likewise for skis and ski boots. Adventure Hostel Reception staff are responsible for sorting any Winter clothing such as ski jackets, pants, helmets and goggles. All of our winter equipment is preloved, or donated equipment that has been left behind by former guests or staff.
To offer this simple service, our Ski Tech operates on an on-call basis. Which means for one hour in the evening each day, they will make themselves available for any guests that wish to rent out our equipment. Guests that are seeking to rent our gear will make themselves known at the hostel Reception desk. Our Team members will then contact the Ski technician to collect the Guests from Reception and take them to our ski equipment stores for sizing and fitting. Once fitted, the ski tech will inform the receptionist on duty to take payment and note which items have been rented.
Outside of fitting guests, they will return used gear to the stores and general ensure the stores are kept organised and tidy throughout the season.
The Ski tech role is work for accommodation, so the 7 hours of work, which nets them a bed in our staff room. Our staff room beds have ultra comfortable mattresses, curtains, USB chargers and reading lights. They'll also have access to any of the hostel’s facilities and amenities, as well as use of the kitchen after-hours, and free laundry use and the use of any Winter equipment for themselves.
The position is set to start immediately. This role is seasonal, and expected to end in mid-late September, as the ski season winds down. Though we will assess based on gear rental sales and the potential for late snow dumps.
This position would be perfect for somebody that is already working at or has experience in a winter equipment rental shop, and is looking to slash the cost of their weekly accommodation. The position will be very easy for those with the know-how. There are no cash handling responsibilities. You just need to turn up and fit the guests out with our gear before passing the guest and a rental form, off to our Reception Team.
