NZ Immigration states that undertaking any kind of employment including payment other than money is only allowed to those that have a work visa. For travellers this is the Working Holiday Visa. To be realistic there are grey areas including farmstays and hostel work. People do work without visas but be warned if you are caught you will be deported and may be denied entry into NZ in the future. For full details on visas available in New Zealand click here. Before looking for work you need to obtain an Inland Revenue Number for Tax purposes. To see how to get one of these see our Inland Revenue Guide.
