There is a great variety of budget accommodation available in New Zealand. Here we have compiled the main options so you can choose the best style for you!
Camping
Around NZ there are a multitude of campsites from basic Department of Conservation (DOC) sites, which can be free, to Holiday Parks with facilities galore. More information is available from the DOC website or have a look in our Website Directory for Holiday Park websites. It is illegal to just make camp in the countryside although some landowners may let you if you ask permission first. It is worth noting that if you are travelling alone camp fees can be of a similar price to a hostel bed and so camping may not actually be the cheapest option. There are also camping facilities available in some of the hostels in New Zealand which give you the advantage of having the facilities nearby.
Hostels
New Zealand has some of the best hostels in the world and increasing competition has meant that standards are high and prices are low. Within New Zealand five Hostel Organisations exist: YHA, BBH, VIP, Nomads and Base. For each of these organisations you can purchase their Hostel Card which will give you discounts at all their hostels and usually some extra benefits. For more details on each company please see their respective websites:
Even though there is an abundance of hostels throughout New Zealand you will find that in the peak season you will need to book ahead. Obtaining a travel guide which lists the hostels in each area will save you time in ringing around. You can also obtain Hostel Directories from each Hostel Network for their own set of hostels.
Within the hostels room prices vary depending on location and dorm size. Shared rooms can range from 3-24 beds and the tariff will reflect this. 1 and 2 person rooms are also available but it is recommended to book ahead as they are very popular. If you are a couple travelling together it is worth considering staying in a Budget Motel as prices can be similar.
Budget Motels
Another option for travellers is to stay in a budget motel. Prices start from around $70 and will include your own bathroom and cooking area. This can be a good option for couples travelling together or for those who want some peace and quiet! The Budget Motel Chain www.budgetmotelchain.com.au has motels throughout New Zealand and a free guide can be picked up at any one of these.
