Urgent - Animal Care = Part-time

Payment: Accommodation & Paid ($17/hr + accommodation options)
Location: Kaikoura town
Region: Christchurch & Canterbury
Experience: Limited Experience Necessary

How about joining our small team to work with animals (and generally help out) on a small 5-acre lifestyle block farm in Kaikoura, North Canterbury = on New Zealand’s South Island?

Positions coming up:
1, 2, or couple – to start Wednesday, 13 December (or soon after)
1, 2, or couple - to start Monday, 18 December (or soon after)

We are an English couple, who have been in NZ for eleven years. We have about thirty FARM ANIMALS; go off-site LLAMA TREKKING; and have six on-site RENTAL PROPERTIES.

Our aim is to constantly move toward more organics and increased self-sufficiency. We already produce a range of meat, fruit and vegetables.

Here is a summery of the range of tasks you will be helping us with:
    1. ANIMAL HELPER ~ we have 30+ animals (pony, donkey, llamas, alpaca, pigs, deer, sheep, chickens, turkeys, collie dog, etc.) You will get involved in their feeding, mucking out (removing poo from) their fields and cages, general care, etc.
    2. CUSTOMER CARE ~ help guests staying and llama trekking customers enjoy visiting our 30+ Farm Animals
    3. PROJECT WORK ~ various projects and site maintenance come up throughout the year & seasonally, including: painting, electrical, fencing, digging, carpentry, chopping wood, animal cage building & repairs, …
    4. GARDENING HELP ~ our vegetable area needs looking after and planting at certain times of the year. Our garden needs weeding, grass & hedge cutting, etc.
    5. PROPERTY CLEANING ~ help clean following guest check-out
    6. DOMESTIC HELP ~ help keep our main house and your facilities clean and tidy, cook meals for everyone, bake cakes, etc.

You will help us with a range of the above tasks, depending on the time of day, time of year, and what needs doing.

We have two spare bedrooms, and a shepherd hut, which are in separate buildings from the main house. You all share your own lounge / common room, which has a sofa, 4K x 58” TV with satellite freeview, Blu-Ray player, etc. And we have 700+ DVD’s and some Blu-Ray’s you can borrow. You have your own bathroom and kitchen. There is free wireless wi-fi broadband / internet. We have some bicycles you can use to get into town, or tour around the sights (it is a flat 4km ride! - although we go into town often and can give you a lift).

We pay $17/hr, two hours a day, for six days a week – one day off. Optional accommodation (on-site) if you would like to stay with us = costs you $35 per day with meals, laundry and WiFi. There is additional voluntary work available too. Volunteer three extra hours a day (six days) and you receive accommodation, food, laundry, WiFi, plus an accommodation discount leaving you earning the following:
- First two weeks = income and accommodation = wwoof’ing + income tax paid = $0
- Week’s three and four = you receive $50 a week (after income tax paid)
- Stay more than a month = you receive $100 a week (after income tax paid).
Minimum stay = 2 weeks (or more). Most stay longer = average stay is about a month, some up to 6 months (the longer the better, from our point of view).
So if you choose to volunteer, your week’s work = five hours for five days, plus two and three hours for the other two days = in exchange for food and accommodation + salary as explained above.

We let those with us decide when to leave, which means we only get about a week’s notice (so please do not apply any more than two weeks in advance).

You must have some previous animal, pet or farm experience, and hopefully you have experienced outdoor work or enjoy some outdoor hobbies. Most of the work is fairly easy, often loads of fun. A brilliant chance for you to learn more about working on a small farm, in the outdoors and animal care. Some daily tasks are physical, so you will need to be fairly fit.

Please = no smokers, and no vegetarians, food allergies, or fussy eaters. (If you stay) our meals are based around lamb, chicken, pork and other meats from animals reared on the farm.

Clothing - we have loads of farm clothing you can use, including warm socks, coats and gum boots (wellies!) So please do not buy anything to come and stay with us!

Because our needs (and your travel plans & dates) usually change, we tend to book you in, only a few days or up to a couple of weeks in advance. We do not book helpers in until you are in NZ. We are not able to sponsor workers to come from abroad. You must have (at least) a NZ working holiday visa, or be an Australian or NZ resident/citizen. We are very uncomfortable having you travel a long distance to come to us, so you must already be in Wellington, or on the South Island. FYI: We are 2.5 hours from Christchurch, and (currently) 5-7 hours from Blenheim or Picton (in Marlborough).

We are just 4km from Kaikoura town centre, the i-site (tourist information), whale watch & dolphin encounter offices, etc. (do not worry if you have not got transport, we will pick you up in town!)

If you are interested, or you have some questions, please send us a message, including: your PHONE NUMBER; some interesting details about yourself (help us to select YOU); your pet, animal, farm or relevant experience; where you are; your nationality; male/female(!); travel dates; etc. (contact details below). Please confirm you have a NZ working visa, or similar? We can only pay you if you have an IRD number and NZ bank account (takes about two weeks to organise)?

Please do not telephone; we prefer to read about you first - thanks!
