There are many kayak trips you can do in New Zealand , but a trip at dusk to see the glow worms is definitely something really unique and quite special. I joined a group at twilight and we headed out to McLaren Falls Park in Tauranga.
After a safety briefing from our guide Grant, we set off by kayak on the calm, safe waters of the lake before entering the river, shrouded in native bush. As it got darker, we listened for the haunting call of New Zealand 's native owl the Ru Ru (Morepork) and watched the speckles of the glow worms amongst the bush.
It really was quite magical, especially as we went into the canyon and saw the amazing sight of the glow worms covering the steep cliffs either side. We also saw the beautiful native Silver Fern and Grant told us stories about how it was used to protect the women and children during times of battle.
There was a chance to take a short walk to a beautiful waterfall before getting back into the kayaks. We then glided effortlessly back along the river after dark where we had the chance to see the glow worms up close including checking out their silk webs. This was a truly amazing experience and a definite must-do during your stay in Tauranga, you won't regret it!
