If you want to experience life on the open waves and fancy yourself as a bit of a sailor, why not join skipper Phil Rietema of Adventure Sail for an exciting experience on the water. Adventure Sail's Harbour Cruise gives you the chance to explore Tauranga's harbour from a totally new perspective.
Cruise past the enormous container ships and sail amongst the anchored boats off Pilot Bay . Then head across the famous main channel, and if you're lucky a ship will be entering or leaving the port. Head on past picturesque Matakana Island into the inner parts of the harbour then back to the sanctuary of the Marina . This trip takes 2-3 hours, depending on wind strength.
There are a few other options available, depending how much time you've got up your sleeve.You could enjoy a leisurely lunch on Matakana Island and have a swim in the clear blue water. Bring your own food or lunch can be provided for an extra charge. (Duration 4-5 hours). Or make the most of it and head out for a day sail, which includes more of an extensive exploration of Tauranga's gorgeous harbour from the container wharfs to Pilot Bay to Omokoroa, with a stop for lunch. Then head back to the Marina .
Or alternatively, sail to the offshore island of Motiti and experience the swell of the ocean, and the sensation of being a real sailor. Fish or snorkel for a few hours and then return home. (Duration 5-6 hours depending on wind). There's also the chance to do an overnight sailing trip, with skippered charters only. Sail offshore to Mayor (Kahu) Island, Motiti Island or anchor in an idyllic spot within Tauranga harbour. If you're lucky, you'll get to check out heaps of wildlife including seals, birds and dolphins. You could even drop a line and catch a fish for dinner.
Night sails are also available, where you will be dazzled by the blinking lights of Tauranga and the channel markers. (Duration 2-3 hours wind dependent). So whatever option you fancy, you'll soon be getting your sea legs as you set sail on a real adventure.
