hi guys,
i'm living in auckland and i'm thinking to start my trip in a ...
Stonehurst Farm Horse Trek
Life on an authentic New Zealand working farm is well worth experiencing. Seeing it from the saddle is even better, as I found out when I went horse trekking with Stonehurst Farm horse treks.
I opted for the Musterer's Trail and I met up with my fellow trekkers, who turned out to have come from a stone's throw away from my home town in Norfolk . They had even learnt to ride at the same stables back in the eighties - sometimes it's such a small world!
We headed out on the expansive and ever-changing farm terrain, taking in the amazing views across the Waimea Plains which unfolded around us. It was great looking across the rolling hills as my horse's ears twitched in the sunshine. We even had the chance for a trot and a canter, as we all had some experience, which was great - loving that wind through the hair feeling!

And our horses were glad of a cooling splash in the river and a rest while we stopped for a snack at the rustic Musterer's Hut, which was a nice pit-stop before we got back in the saddle and headed homeward.
Our guide even introduced us to one of the horses who was featured in Lord of the Rings, on the way back to the stables. Although I didn't think fame had gone to his head, as he was politely chewing the same grass as the other horses. Bless him!
There are lots of treks to choose from, ranging from a one hour scenic farm trail to a half day river ride and even a two and a half hour sundowner. The friendly team will even pick you up from Nelson if you don't have transport, so you won't be left high and dry!
Stonehurst Farm caters for riders of all abilities and there is a chance to trot and canter on longer treks.
They are open all year round, and the farm is 20 minutes drive from Nelson, off Clover Road , which is just off State Highway 6.
Rachel stayed at Tasman Bay Backpackers at 10 Weka Street , Nelson. It's a real home from home with a lovely cosy atmosphere. The best thing is, you get free breakfast with toast, cereals and tea and coffee, and every night they serve a yummy hot chocolate pudding with ice cream which is simply devine!
