GlenMac Farmstay, Waitaki Valley
If you want to experience life on a real working New Zealand farm, then GlenMac is a great place to stay between Dunedin and Mt Cook.
GlenMac is a 1583 hectare high country merino sheep and beef cattle farm in the stunning Waitaki Valley , which is just off State Highway 83, a direct link to Mt Cook and the nearby lakes.
There's heaps to do on the farm - why not start with tramping (hiking) and horse riding through rolling farmland and hill country, with breathtaking scenery as the backdrop.
Hosts Kaye and Keith Dennison are always keen to show you around - ask them about touring high and tussock country in their 4WD vehicle. You'll also be able to check out seasonal farm activities, Merino sheep, beef cattle and sheep dogs, along with panoramic views.
If you're keen on salmon and trout fishing, Kaye and Keith can organise a guide by arrangement, so no worries there. There's also a golf course within 10 minutes of GlenMac Farm.
Evenings can be spent relaxing in the family living room, watching TV, reading a magazine or playing cards. So whatever you're into, you're sure to find it at GlenMac Farm.
GlenMac Farmstay is two hours drive north of Dunedin on State Highway 83, between Duntroon and Kurow. It is also two hours from Mount Cook and three and a half hours from Christchurch .
The family farm is 60km from Oamaru and 14km from Kurow township.
The backpackers' self-contained accommodation sleeps nine, and linen is supplied. Meals are available, and it costs $25 per night.
The Farmstay, Bed and Breakfast offers double and single rooms from $35 per night. Dinners are available and there are ensuite and shared bathrooms.
*Campervans and tents are also welcome. Campervans are $25 (2 people) per night. Tents are $8 (per person) per night.
If you don't have your own transport pick-ups can be arranged from Oamaru. The Magic Bus will also drop off and pick up at GlenMac.
