Hiace Self Contained Solar

located in Auckland and listed under Cars & Campervans

Sunny is a fully self contained campervan with 40l fresh water tank, 48l grey water tank, electric sink pump, and never used chemical toilet. On the roof is a 120W solar panel, with a 100 Amp Hour sealed deep cycle battery, 20A solar charge controller, and 200W pure sine wave inverter (modified sine inverters are much cheaper but will damage delicate electronics in laptops or cameras). The solar panel typically charges 12-15 AH on sunny days. This is enough to run the light, water pump, and charge a cellphone, camera, and laptop. (Cell phones usally pull 3-4AH for reference) and the battery holds enough to get you through a few days of rain.

There is a high quality icy-tek cooler that will keep ice for 3-4 days, and a two burner LPG stove with 2kg LPG bottle. This lasted me 4 weeks plus of daily use and costs $5-10 to refill, far easier and more economical than butane cannister stoves. Sunny also has a very heavy duty, rubberized, canvas roll out sunshade. It's perfect for making a dry, sheltered porch next to the van.

Inside, there are drawers for the stuff you need more often, and extra storage space under the bed for the stuff you use less frequently. The bed is a comfortable size for one person and OK for two as long as you're willing to cuddle. There are curtains on all of the windows as well as a dark tint to help you sleep in and keep your privacy.

Included are all of the plates, mugs, pots, knives, cutlery etc. I have accumulated while traveling. Also included are a number of various plastic storage bins used to keep everything organized. It's very easy to open the rear door from inside to boil water for tea, coffee or other basic things while staying warm and cozy in bed. More complicated cooking happens outside with the rear hatch protecting you from the weather.

This diesel van that gets a consistent 10-11km/l. While as a diesel it is subject to the dreaded RUC, diesel is typically 60-70c a litre cheaper than petrol. This puts you far ahead in the long run (you can pay the RUC online or in a post shop, it's really, really easy). Sunny does have a lot of kilometers but runs on the bulletproof Toyota 3l 4 cylinder engine. For any Top Gear fans this is the same type of engine in the Hilux Truck they attempted (and failed) to kill. I put close to 15,000km on this van and it's run beautifully the whole time. The automatic transmission makes it easy to drive, even for people unused to vans. There is a brand new WOF on it, good until April and it has been serviced regularly.

Sunny is a perfect vehicle for somebody that wants to explore off the beaten path; to spend a week without going into town and still be comfortable, with your food cold, your music and camera charged. I'm happy to send you more pictures if you'd like, I have lots!

Sunny will be available in Auckland for viewing starting on the 25th of October. Earlier viewings may be able to be arranged, I will be traveling around the North Island.

The price is $7500NZ or $4750US
