In reality there is not a bad time to visit New
Zealand. However depending on how you like to travel, the temperatures
you like to live in and what you want to get up to will determine
the time of year you head off. Below are the different seasons
and what you can expect:
Dec - March (Summer)
Main summer season in New Zealand in this
period and it gets very busy with tourists
Most travellers here at this time so you
certainly wont be alone!
Usually have to book ahead for most things
including accom and transport, tracks etc
Every company will be running so you'll have
the most activities to choose from
The hottest weather and most sun
Max. temperature of around 30
° C in the North, 20
° C in the South
March - June (Autumn)
A quieter period so don't really need to book
ahead
Less travellers and so more freedom to just
come and go
More mixed weather meaning rain as well as
sun
Autumn means some amazing colours and not
so sweltering hot!
The time of year for Rugby fans!
This is the season of cultural festivals throughout many of the cities
June - September (Winter)
Main winter season in New Zealand
Only really busy in Winter resorts, such as
Queenstown and cities
Much colder including snow and lots of rain
Some activities close, transport is less frequent
and some tours not operating
Time to take up Skiiing and Snowboarding in
one of the many ski resorts re-opening in June
Max. temperature around 15
° C in the North and 10
° C in the South.
September - December (Spring)
Springtime with
mixed weather but some sun shining through!
Much quieter
than peak season but with most companies now operating
Good time
to get those jobs before the masses arrive!
Ski season ends and resorts get
ready for summer adrenalin sports!
Ideal time of year for visitors who enjoy bush walks, bike rides and nature activities
