First of all Stonehurst in Christchurch, they're the best.
Nicely organised, lots of room, small stock of essentials in house, good kitchen, lovely ladies to help you out, ...
And also I've spent 2 nights in the Budget backpackers at the edge of lake Wakatipu, Queenstown. Not too fancy but cheap and friendly trampers made they stay very pleasant. Also the owner at the reception (can't remember his name though) has lots of good advice and stories on things to do.

Heya "Guest", the stonehurst here in Christchurch is really nice. They look pretty flash in the website, and it is an accurate portrayal. They are at the higher class end of backpacker accomodation, but their dorms and shares are still competitive. I get a few customers that have stayed a few nights in the cheaper dorm section, and then gotten a nice private motel unit there for their last night before heading out of town.

Definitely a nice place to stay, but then so are most of the hostels here in Christchurch. Other number one picks would probably be the Occidental, Vagabond, and the Old Country House...

I think I wrote a reply with more details about the local hostels a while ago, maybe Chris can find it and repost it here for us?
