Let me preface this review by metioning that I am NOT AN ARTIST! Not even close in fact, so I was a little trepidatious about spending a perfectly sunny beautiful day in Nelson doing something that could possibly turn out to be a disaster(as have much of my other attempts at art.)
I was picked up at 9:30am by Stephan, the teacher. Stephan in an immigrant from Germany but dont let that fool you, he is well trained and well versed in the traditions of this ancient Maori craft.
There were 3 of us and Stephan encouraged us to either pick an existing design or make up our own. I decided to make my own despite being artistically challenged.
I wont go into the detail of how to make a bone carving, but I will tell you this....the end product was a BEAUTIFUL pendant necklace that I made with my own two hands (with the help of a few tools and a little guidance from the pro). When I get back home I will try to post a URL for a picture of it....it has inlaid Paua shell and if I had bought it in the store, I would have expected to pay way more than the $55nz that I paid for the class.
Sure, you can buy some cheap plastic looking thing at a souvenir shop for 6 bucks, but there is DEFINITELY a difference in the quality of those pieces and besides, if you take this class, you can proudly say, "thanks...I MADE IT in New Zealand!!" when your friends ooh and ahh at your pendant.
I would have to HIGHLY recommend the bone carving class in Nelson. I believe Stephan is the only one who does this here, and I think you can find his info at any hostel counter or the internet. BUt for just in case, here is the phone # 03-546 42 75
Don't miss this one......it was GREAT! _________________ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.
I just wanted to add that I heard about this from somewhere else and was directed to www.creativetourism.co.nz, where there's also info about lots of similar workshops in the area.
they're really nice, so if you're going to be up north, give them a call. they make their living making carvings, but take on students if they're prebooked.
