Wanganui River is gorgeous, used a lot in Lord of the Rings. The city itself is a cute place, go into the Art Gallery up on the hill it is gorgeous and has a lot of great showings...also, there are good fish and chips, and a donut shop that are cheap. Just wander around, have fun. Not a bad place to relax.

Wanganui has something for everyone except perhaps those who can't survive without being in a large crowd. The city including rural areas has a population of 44,000. For those who prefer an urban setting: A fantastic museum which has a maori display equal to any in New Zealand and a good representation of colonial New Zealand life. The Art gallery is worth a visit and many "arty types" have made a home in Wanganui. The opera house is a rare "victorian gem" Wanganui is well known for its city gardens and tree lined streets which were established in the 18th century, of notable interest are: Kowhai park, Bason Botanical Reserve, Virginia lake is a wildlife reserve and has an excellent display of rare plants in the "winter garden". A trip to Bushy Park wildlife reserve is worth the journey. This park includes a victorian mansion restored and furnished to its former beauty, the park has become an inland conservation island free of introduced predators to the native bird life. The bird life that abounds within this sanctuary is incredible. This park also contains the largest Southern Rata tree in the world.
For the more adventurous!!! The Whanganui National Park is worth exploring. The Park is situated along the route of the Whanganui River, from Mount Tongariro - the Wanganui River mouth on the west coast. Travel either by road along the "river road" or on the water by canoe, jet boat or a restored coal fired paddle steamer. The Whanganu river was originally the only route into the centre of the North Island from the early 1800's and this history is reflected by the remaining buildings still to be seen. _________________ Adventures start after the planning is done and the first step is taken!
