Hello all!
I recently finished a "adventure caving" trip with Wild West Adventures into the Dragon cave in Greymouth. I want to let you all know that it was heaps of fun, but after I took the trip, I took a look at the brohure they put out and it didn't accurately describe the trip I experienced.
In the trip I went on, we suited up in wetsuits and helmets with a light on top, took a short walk through the rainforest, then entered the mouth of the cave. We hopped over slippery rocks and through some water and were told about the cave formations and glow worms. Then we jumped in some inner tubes that were already stashed down in the cave and floated a short way (in the dark so we could see the glow worms) down some water in the cave. Then we stopped and had a little chocolate bar and some hot chocolate, and then proceeded a short way into the cave. We then turned around and went up the way we came (inner tube float and all) but veered off at a fork where the guide sent us off on our own through what he called the "love hole" which was first a series of narrow areas then through a tight hole at the end. We were then back near the entrance of the cave and we climbed out. We were offered a ride on a "hydroslide" which looked dangerous so only one guy did it and he looked like he had had fun. We walked back through the rainforest and were driven back to the office where we jumped in a hot tub and were given beer, wine or tea and a muffin. The total trip took about 3 and a half hours.
Overall, it was fun...and if you have nothing to compare it to, it was a great time...especially if you don't have time to get up to Waitomo. The cost was $120.00 NZ and I'd say that was worth it.
I will be headed uo to Waitomo soon and will do the black water rafting there (weather permitting) and will post here the difference in quality and price for anyone interested.
