backpackerboard was launched in 2002 as an online notice board for backpackers to buy and sell. In the last five years, we have become the largest online portal devoted to backpacking in New Zealand. As well as plenty of travel information, we also offer live job listings and special deals for backpackers. We now receive between 25,000 and 30,000 unique visitors to the site each month, pushing through a whopping 2.5 million hits. We pride ourselves on providing extensive information on all areas relating to backpacking in NZ and we are on hand through the forum to answer any other questions you may have. All of this is free of charge.
WHERE IS BACKPACKER BOARD SITUATED?
backpackerboard was started in New Zealand but is now run out of the United Kingdom by a family company Silverfox Global Ltd. Why are we not in NZ? Well, we had to return home after backpacking! Having been backpackers ourselves, traveling around NZ, we are able to provide a true traveler’s opinion and we have extensive first-hand knowledge of visas, backpacker transport and accommodation which many locals in NZ don't. We visit NZ regularly to keep our information up to date and we have lots of friends and partners over there to help us out.
HOW IS BACKPACKER BOARD FUNDED?
backpackeboard doesn't charge backpackers anything to use our site - all the information and services are provided free of charge. We cover our costs by allowing reputable travel companies to advertise on our site. This does not bias our information and we only work with companies who we believe offer a great product or service to travellers in NZ. If you would like to advertise on our site please get in touch here.
Meet the Team
Paul (Silverfox) Paul is the financial director of backpackerboard and keeps a general eye on the site. He's visited New Zealand three times and cites Hot Water beach in the Coromandel as one of his favourite places. When he's not in the office, he can be found on the badminton court.
Chris Chris is the original backpacker who started backpackerboard while he was on a gap year in New Zealand. Feeling that there was a lack of information to help him on his travels, he decided to source it himself and then put it all on a website for other travellers to use! He lived in New Zealand for two years and has to date circled both islands eight
times, taking in almost everything there is to see and do!
Isabel Isabel joined the team at the start of 2007 and handles all the day-to-day running of the site. She has worked and traveled all over New Zealand extensively and is passionate about the country. She worked for a NZ travel magazine for four years and so has a wealth of knowledge stored up top. Her favourite bits of NZ include the Abel Tasman National Park and the Nevis bungy!
Rachel
Rachel Pinder first travelled to New Zealand on her way to Oz in 2003 and loved it so much she wanted to stay. So after a bit of a detour through South America and Africa, she ended up back there via Canada to take up her residency. Rachel qualified as a journalist in Leeds back in 1997 and had always supplemented her travels with articles about her adventures along the way. Her fave spots in NZ are Northland, Hawke's Bay and the West Coast of the south island.
Eve A keen travel writer studying English at University, Eve is the newest member of our team. She's a great editorial assistant! Having backpacked around the world, she's a fantastic researcher and knows the eseential information to seek out. She's also fluent in Spanish and cooks a mean tortilla!
Kat (Kiwikat) Kat is one of our forum administrators based in New Zealand and
has a great knowledge of the country, and travelling in general. If she doesn't know the answer, it probably isn't worth knowing!
Pauline (Tanya) Finally. there's the other director of the company - Pauline. Her work is mostly behind the scenes on the admin side of things. She's been to New Zealand three times, loves a bit of a Zorb and hanging out at Milford Sound.
